WHEN FIRST

By Richard Humphries

ree

When first I loved you it was too soon

And I had no heart

to steal a rose that was yet to bloom

When next I saw you embraced with another

My soul was wrenched

that I had not been your lover

I saw you again as a new-wed bride

With happiness abundant

and I loved you with such pride

Next time we met you had a child

Who had calmed your spirit

that once I loved so wild

The years passed by and your family grew

Yet still I failed to lose

and separate the love I had for you

We met again in some years time

When both of us were old

and generations way beyond our prime

When last I saw you love’s glow still refused to dim

And yet I had loved you

in all innocence of sin

Throughout our lives I loved none else but you.

My torment was…

…that you never, ever knew.
