WALTZ #2

By Rachel David

In the background, Elliot Smith sings about loneliness

In the background, the sound of running water

He sings about not knowing, and I know

he’s right. I know that no one knows

the colour of my blood. Or that I cry a little

when I see the sun reflected on still water

No one knows I’m lying here, thoughts fighting for space

in my head, in a war that can never be won

He says he’s tired, tired. And I’m tired too

slowly drifting off, a moment of peace on cold tiles

It’s funny that our bodies can’t tell between

exciting and anxiety

They both have Xs after all

It’s funny that our bodies just decide

In the background, Elliot Smith sings about wanting

to be left alone in the place where he has what it takes

In the background, a flock of geese remind me

that this isn’t the end I’m looking for
