VENDETTA

By Darshanika Panda

Click, Clack, Click- the staccato of familiar heels

My heart works up a tremor beating too swift

Who’s home so early on a cold Friday night

Could a figment of my imagination be running wild?

And there she stands at my doorway-

My baby

Oh, look at her killer smile;

Her lips that once whispered sweet melodies

Now sing to me a very scary eulogy.

Click, Clock, Click- her revolver spins

Standing at the doorway, she laughs seeing me flinch

For the trust I betrayed, the vows I broke

She’s back tonight to collect the unpaid price.

Tick, tock, tick- my table clock chimes

Your time’s up, she says and smiles

The air gets heavy with love and despair

As she prowls like a graceful lioness in her lair.

Here’s my final wish, I whisper a plea

Let us end what remains unfinished

Kiss me slowly as I embrace death

Watch me bleed as my soul takes its leave.

The bullet whizzes, and I crumble to the floor

There, there, my love- she whispers, leaning close

Her soft kisses linger on my trembling lips

Humming the lullaby:

And now you know my love, how vengeance heals.
