THAT'S NO WAY TO SAY GOODBYE

By Teresa Coen

Grief meandered into my mind a slow flowing stream

But sat for a time on the outside of the skin

The gentle slow surge of pain making its way in

But everybody knows it starts in the toes

And climbs like a scorpion through the legs and the bones

Its tail ready to sting and burn

It causes destruction at every turn

Grief came knocking that day

When I was going about my day

I didn’t invite you

But you entered anyway

At first, I thought it was a dream

Your face before me all smiles

It was surreal

I wanted to wake up from this

Nightmare that I was living in

Our weekend plans thrown in disarray

We had a suit picked out

But for a different occasion

The needle empty, the damage done

Now you lay in your wooden casket

Your picture on the holy pamphlet

I’m angry and I’m hurt

We were meant to be together

Until we were old and grey

Travelling through life

To have the last say

We didn’t pay attention that day

And then the devil had his way
