SHADOWS EMBRACE

By Nadia Beckett

ree

In the clinch of twilight where illusions decay

Beneath the cold gaze of the moonlit display

Silhouettes stretch long like fingers of dread

Cradling the secrets suppression has fed

My heart beats cold with an echoing thrum

World painted grey where joys seldom come

Laughter’s lost cadence drifts out of my reach

And quiet is wisdom that darkness does teach

Now vacant eyes where starlight won’t shine

I wander through glimpses of moments in time

Warmth slips away like sand through my hands

I gather the shadows, they hear my demands

Soul dressed in black like depths of despair

Worn thin by the weight of the burdensome air

No colours to brighten this desolate maze

Just remnants of dreams in their ashen haze

For here in the void my demons they play

I dance with ghosts at the end of each day

Their laughter it haunts, their sorrow it sings

An anthem is born of all shattered things

So I'll evanesce into night’s velvet shroud

Where voices are muted and silence is loud

Here in the stillness I've learned how to trust

To exist is to suffer, so suffer I must.
