PAINTING THE FAMILY HEAD

By Sorlie Lennox

I lift the bony head

from where I left it

up on the cliffs.

Looking out to sea

it is blown bone dry

and salted - stiff as a cod!

Wide eyes ever open

deep with the pain

of sleeplessness

its grin of sin

mocked now

by its skeletal

powerlessness.

I paint the head pink -

add diamante jewels,

and sit it on my windowsill.

And there you are!

Back home again!

But this time…

You can do us no harm.
