MUM'S TAXI

By Laura Quigley

My first act as a parent, so

precarious, I took you home.

Now I wait here for the ferry

and it’s raining and it’s cold.

The roads have turned to rivers,

the rivers oceans, but you know

I will drive against the tide.

I’ll be there to take you home.

However far you wander,

I am ready by the phone.

However bleak your journey,

I have been there. Yes, I know -

There’ll be nights you feel abandoned,

staring at the endless road,

but I will find you,

pull up beside you,

headlights shining.

We’ll turn on the radio.

I love to hear you sing.

I live to know your song.

As we travel, we sing stories

of all the people we have known.

Since the day of your arrival,

I have never felt alone.

So when at last this party’s over,

I’ll be there to take you home.
