MORNING ALARM

By Benjamin Howell

And now the demons appear.

Newly paralysed,

I lay frozen in fear.

From a nightmare,

To a fixed stare.

A wide mouthed, whispered

“Help”

A sound no louder than thought,

I’m terrified,

Concrete,

Locked inside,

I’m distraught.

The devil rises over the foot of the bed

And the shadow moves in for the kill.

Apart from my widening eyes,

I am imperfectly still.

Disturbed, you wake and love drives you to my aid,

A hug, kind words they soothe and sedate.

Once again you have kept my demons at bay,

It’s a hell of a way to start each day
