EXIT INTERVIEW

They asked why I was leaving.
I said “growth,”
which is what you call decay
when it happens slowly enough.
I stayed longer than I should have
long enough to memorize
everyone’s breaking point
and mistake it for personality.
Strengths:
I can watch things fall apart
without intervening.
It’s not apathy
it’s respect for the process.
Weaknesses:
I learn people
the way you learn exits in a building
quickly,
in case of emergency.
Achievements:
no scenes,
no raised voices,
no evidence
of what actually happened.
They thanked me for my honesty.
I didn’t correct them.
On my way out
I held the door open
for the next one
they smiled.
I almost warned them.
