A HEARTLESS GOD

By Desiree Dawn

God said he'd take our hearts of stone

And replace them with hearts of flesh

But a flesh heart that beats alone

Weighs heavier on my chest

Sorrow never threatened my cold stone heart

Grief's gaze I never feared

I could suffer loss without falling apart

And would be a stranger to tears

But this flesh heart is a new design

Made to carry love and loss

Yet it seems the love in this heart of mine

Often comes at too great a cost

They say better to have loved and lost

Than never to have loved at all

But I'd rather live without this cross

And no longer falter and fall

When the final beat sounds in my chest

And God beckons me from his throne

I hope that as I'm laid to rest

I'm buried with a heart of stone
