THE DEVIL'S MASS

When the light was taken from the day

And the land was hugged in darkness,

The devil did come.

He whispered quietly-told me to pray.

In the church I prayed in the blackness

Of his shadow-to the devil, I succumb.

With my soul crucified on the marble altar

In the burning church.

The ashes of the bible were scattered.

A dying religion, a truth we can’t alter.

The sulphur fumes lurch

Into the air, the stained glass shattered.

When the devil said mass the demons

Bowed and god gave our daily bread.
