The words rested uncomfortably on my tongue
Like a mouth full of marbles
I knew I couldn’t swallow them down.
As though it were a foreign language
I found myself drowning in a sea of words.
I rushed to the surface
gasping for air
expelling water from my lungs
in the form of
“I love you”
It was sudden and abrupt
but darling so were we.
The silence was deafening
and the words hung in around us
like the din on a funeral bell.
I clambered off the life raft of your body
as you came to terms with the damage done.
I curled into the recovery position, realizing
I had landed in a distant land
And the distance between us was more than an ocean.
